Bell Road Book Club: Horse

Join the Bell Road Book Club, Thurs. July 18 at 6:00 pm in the NCPL’s Makerspace, to discuss Horse by Geraldine Brooks. This novel is based on the life of Lexington, a 19th-century bay stallion who was one of the most famous thoroughbreds in American history. Brooks also presents the story of Jarret, an enslaved black groomsman and trainer, who formed a deep and abiding bond with Lexington as both are sold to various owners. The novel opens in contemporary Wash. D.C. with Theo, a PhD student in art history and son of a Black diplomat who discovers a painting of the famous horse. We also meet Jess, an Osteologist, who studies the thoroughbred’s skeleton at the Smithsonian and becomes equally enthralled with Lexington’s story. As a horse lover and a rider herself, Brooks adeptly furnishes details and descriptions that immerse the reader in the horse racing world of that era transforming a remarkable story into an intriguing and unforgettable novel.
